“What about jealousy?” Hannah yelled from her end of the dinner table.

“No.” Simon let out a sigh. “We tried that already. She’s immune. However, interestingly enough, Anson isn’t.”

The woman’s eyes lit up. “Is that so?”

Anson tried to tune the two of them out. From the second his sister had arrived yesterday, all she wanted to do was talk about Miranda. Which happened to be a subject Anson would rather avoid. Today was the first day since his return to the country that he hadn’t tried to see Miranda.

Thinking about their interlude by the stream had him gulping down his wine. He knew he’d made a mistake, but he couldn’t erase her parting remark. After giving herself to him, she’d told him to marry another woman. That had been what he’d asked her to do, but he hadn’t expected her to execute his wishes so quickly.

To make matters worse, the girl she chose for him was an amicable lady. He had used today to get a little information about the girl, and apparently Miranda had gone to great lengths to bring him a viable candidate. Damn it.

“So, what do you think, Anson?”

Both pairs of eyes fell on him following his sister’s question.

“I have no idea. I stopped listening to the two of you drone on a long time ago.”

Simon’s brows knitted. “Why is that? We were talking on one of your favorite subjects. One, I must add, that you’ve been loath to speak of since yesterday. Did you even bother to visit her today?”
